QR Codes

generate-1

QR Codes were invented in America but applications were slow to catch on here and are much more advanced in Europe. Now, look for the wave of applications to come hard and fast to the US.

Be prepared to find these little buggers everywhere (t-shirts, ads, brochures, banners, at sporting events, Facebook pages). QR codes when scanned by a smart phone can take you directly to a special offer, a web page, a phone number, twitter page, Google maps location, text message, etc. Nova is developing a trade show application to direct attendees to a landing page promoting a new product! Generation of the codes is free (cool!). Work with your mar-com firm for creative applications.

I generated the QR code above to take you to a map location page for our office. Check it out!

URLs: Smaller is Better

I just received a looong broken up link in a personal email to register for an event. Needless to say it did not work and I did not have the time to piece it back together. Using long URL links in personal email is so old school (in a bad way). Short URLs are kind of required in tweets. Basically shortened URLs using free online services shows you respect your client’s and prospects time…and email windows. I use bit.ly on a regular basis. You can also use tinyURL.

Here is an example:

Original: http://www.livecrunch.com/2009/02/25/top-10-tiny-short-url-service-generators/

Shortened: http://bit.ly/259hN5

Sooo much nicer!

Links in formatted email is a whole different ballgame. More on that later…

All I want for Christmas is a Content Management System

Who likes to wait? During the holidays I dread standing in lines at the mall or even the grocery. The lines just seem to get longer the closer we get the holidays.

Getting changes done by your web team can be equally as painful. We often have to get in line to get our changes done and have to wait until it’s our turn. Well content management changes all that. Here are five reasons you will love to have a “CMS” if you don’t already have one:

  1. Speed: Make changes yourself. No waiting for the Web team to acknowledge that you exist or that your changes are done. No checking up. It just gets done, period. More time for “Christmas Punch”.
  2. Cost: If you are using an outside source, costs pile up quickly. More bucks for that new I-Phone.
  3. Add pages: Expand your site quickly and easily. More savings for your marketing budget.
  4. SEO: Get found. Your CMS can have a database driven structure for web site SEO friendly URLs
  5. Feel good: Dang…it was pretty easy! Less stress and I learned something new I can put on the old resume…mmmmmm

If you have a blog, like WordPress or Blogger, you kind of get the idea. They have CMS built right in.

A CMS is a must have for any Christmas list. If you are lucky you may get more than fruitcake this year!
