What is a QR code?

QR stands for Quick Response. A QR code is a more complex barcode. When scanned with the camera of your reader enabled smart phone, you gain access to the information embedded in the code. This information may be a web site url, a text message, or an address book entry - also called a vCard.

You’ve likely seen an image like this one used in advertisement somewhere – be it an airport, train, newspaper, or pretty much anywhere else ink can go. It’s called a QR code and the rise of smartphones has allowed marketers to put it to use in many places.  A QR code is simply a bar code that links to a piece of digital content such as a website, download, or image.  They can also be used to activate phone functions like “add a new contact” or “send a text message”.  All a user needs to scan the code is a free QR code reader application installed to their smartphone.

At Nova, we’ve been incorporating them into some of our recent campaigns.  One manufacturing company made a QR code from a piece of metal using one of their fabrication and plating processes and placed it in their booth display at a show to link to the mobile site showing additional capabilities.  The code above links to a mobile website we developed.

Essentially, a QR code is a call to action to the recipient of a piece of advertising.  It requires them to do something to obtain additional information and encourages engagement rather than allowing passive viewing of an advertising message. QR codes put information directly in a user’s hands via their smartphone.
