The Wild World of Online Daily Deals

Chances are, you have at least one e-mail in your inbox every day alerting you to deep discounts at a featured local business.  You may even be on the receiving end of several different daily notifications or have a deal delivery service’s mobile app installed on your smartphone.  But have you ever thought about running a deal for your own business?

Here are a few things you need to know before getting into the deal game:

  • There are hundreds of daily deal sites on the web, but the current most popular (and consequently, those with the largest audiences) are Groupon and LivingSocial. Google stepped into the game over the summer with Google Offers and has already expanded its userbase by two cities since launch. Amazon has their own local daily deals site in Amazon Local.
  • The goal of daily deal sites is to drive customer acquisition.
  • 88.2 million US Adults will redeem an online coupon this year, nearly half of the web audience. By 2013, that number is expected to reach 96.8 million.
  • 1 in 10 mobile users redeem coupons. That number should increase to 1 in 5 by 2013.
  • 68% of consumers say they’re likely to make an impulse purchase on a daily deal website.
  • 97% of consumers say that discounts on daily deal sites encourage customer loyalty.
  • A business’ online reviews increases significantly after running a daily deal, so take care that your customer service is in shape to avoid negative reviews.
